I had a look at this link. Whilst it is pretty good in that it gives a generic account of GD and its role in WW2, it is peppered with mistakes and inaccuracies.
For example, to the best of my knowledge GD did not take part in the offensive to relieve Stalingrad! At around this time GD was actually involved in the Rhzev, Belgorad and Kharkov actions.
I also raised an eyebrow at the following statement:
"As an Army formation, Großdeutschland was ordered to wear their cuff title on the left sleeve, since the SS wore theirs on the right."
Perhaps Guy Sajer got it right then???
Thanks for diggin up the link though. We are here to learn I guess so any and all info is open to question?
Yes, with research sometimes one has to pick out the details that one finds to be useful and then discard others. One problem with researching GD, is that its various elements did not often fight together, but were spread out over various areas of the front to support sectors that were threatened.
I do remember that some elements of GD were moved toward Rostov, or were going to be moved toward Rostov, as a result of the debacle going on at Stalingrad or shortly thereafter. Not sure if they actually were moved there at all, but I have read this in several different places.
